Thomas W. Massfeller September 4, 1947 - June 1, 2020 tap-a-tour.com Nathan Cobb Shipwreck 1896 Thomas W. Massfeller, 72, of Ormond Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 1, 2020 at his home. He was born September 4, 1947 in New Castle, Delaware to Kurt and Margaret (Eastman) Massfeller. Thomas was an Engineer with Dupont in their sales and purchasing departments for many years. He was a member of The Ormond Beach Historical Society, The Ormond Yacht Club, The Chamber of Commerce, Oceanside Country Club, Kiwanis, and Ormond Beach Garden Club. Tom Massfeller was an avid hands-on supporter of many local historic events throughout Volusia County and will be remembered by all. Thomas W. Massfeller, 72, of Ormond Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 1, 2020 at his home. Two boats were launched toward the survivors as a crowd on the beach watched intently. Five times the boats carrying two men and ropes attempted a rescue, but were unsuccessful. Unfortunately, one man attempting the rescue, Freed Waterhouse, lost his life.
Timber from the wreck was salvaged by William (Billy) Fagen and a small three-room cottage was built on Orchard Lane called the Nathan Cobb Cottage. At the time, 1896, the lot where the cottage was built was part of the John Anderson “Santa Lucia Plantation” just north of the Hotel Ormond along the Halifax River…
                           In   1897,   a   monument   to   Waterhouse   was   erected   in   the dunes    near    the    wreck    site    to    commemorate    his    bravery.      However,   in   July   of   1972   vandals   chiseled   the   bronze   plaque from   the   stone   that   held   it.      The   plaque   was   located   in   the palmetto   scrub   in   the   dunes   in   November   1972   and   was   safe and   secure   on   the   east   side   of   the   Casa   Del   Mar   Motel   near the   shipwreck   site.   Since   hurricane   Irma   in   2017,   the   Casa Del    Mar    was    extensively    renovated    and    the    plaque    went missing again.
